Environmental Risks and the MediaAuthor:
Barbara AdamPages:

EnglishISBN10:
0415214475Environmental Risks and the Media explores the ways in which environmental risks, threats and hazards are represented, transformed and contested by the media. At a time when popular conceptions of the environment as a stable, "natural" world with which humanity interferes are becoming increasingly contested, the media's methods of encouraging audiences to think about environmental risks--from the "mad cow" crisis to global warming--are becoming more and more controversial. Examining large-scale disasters as well as "everyday" hazards, the contributors consider the tensions between entertainment and information in media coverage of the environment. The issues explored include: how the media frame "expert," "counter-expert" and "lay public" definitions of environmental risk; the role played by environmental pressure groups like Greenpeace in shaping media coverage; and the media's emphasis on spectacular events at the expense of issue-sensitive reporting.

Try to comprehend me. Listen silently with no inner chattering, with no inner talk, without evaluating. I am not saying believe what I say, I am not saying accept what I say. I am saying there is no need to be in a hurry to accept or reject. First at least listen – why be in such a hurry? When you see a roseflower, do you accept or reject it? When you see a beautiful sunset, do you accept or reject it? You simply see it, and in that very seeing is a meeting. If what I am saying has anything of truth in it, it will be understood by your heart. But the mind has to give way. And then you will not need to change your life according to it, it will be changed of its own accord.”by OSHOVideo: 720?544 (4:3); 887 kbps; 25 fps; MPEG-4 (DivX 5)

Beginning Programming For Dummies, 3rd EditionAuthor:
Wallace WangPages:
430Format:

EnglishISBN10:
0764549979I have to deal with computers for my work at the hospital, which like many such institutions has become more and more computerized with every passing year. I would find the fact far less irritating if those who have charge of the process would stop tinkering with it long enough for me to use it with the "efficiency" that was originally intended, but such is never the case. To help me get a feeling for what the IMS people are doing so that I can better understand the entire process, I decided to take a mini-course on beginning programming. Wallace Wang's Beginning Programming for Dummies was the suggested course text, and although I started out convinced that I could never understand even a fraction of the information, I was pleasantly surprised. As advertised the fundamentals of programming presented in the text were understandable and doable. I was completely surprised to discover that my home computer already had a QBASIC program available on it and that I could use it to make simple programs. By following the book step by step, I was able to accomplish the tasks as designed and was amazed at the types of things the programs I wrote could do. I'm not sure that I have anything earth shaking to design for computers or that I'll be so taken with programming that I will give up surgical ICU to take it up, but I feel far more aware of computers and their inner workings now than I ever was and maybe a little more patient with them. Maybe.

High Techne: Art and Technology from the Machine Aesthetic to the PosthumanAuthor:
R.L. RutskyPages:
208Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
081663355XFrom Baudelaire's confrontation with the specter of art photography to the present age of mirror shades, Pentium-envy and ambient dance tracks, Rutsky provides a fairly comprehensive, though sometimes fluidly categorized, overview of the development of the modern "aesthetic of technology." For Rutsky, technology, once clearly defined as "other" than what is human, has perhaps replaced religion and psychology as the main source of metaphors for how the mind (and soul) work. Citing a range of modern philosophers and thinkers from Heidegger, Benjamin and Duchamp to the inevitable William Gibson and the doyenne of cyber-aesthetics, Donna Haraway, the book covers a lot of ground--Shelley's Frankenstein, the constructivist films of Vertov, a reading of William Gibson via Frederic Jameson, a long section on Fritz Lang's film Metropolis and a detour into a theory of Nazism and Hitler fascination as the fervid fetishizing of an androgynous leader. Rutsky falters a bit when it comes to contemporary art and cultural practices, where some fieldwork and reportage would have given his examples more punch. Like George Landow's paean to cyberculture, Hypertext, the book is best on how thinking about technology helps resolve certain philosophical conundrums--organic vs. mechanic; rational vs. irrational; masculine vs. feminine--that have plagued the West, perhaps even providing the ground for a total unified field theory. Lucid and cogent in its presentation of highly complicated issues, this study will reward those interested in the fatal attraction of art and culture.

The toxicology of fishesAuthor:
Richard T.Di Giulio, David E.HintonPages:

PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
041524868XToxicology, the study of the adverse effects of chemicals, has a rich history, the bulk of which revolves around understanding the effects of poisons on humans. Michael Gallo (2001) provided an excellent and lively historical perspective on human health-oriented toxicology, including historical and literary examples of inquiry from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Age of Enlightenment. As he noted, modern toxicology draws upon many fields of basic science; these include molecular biology, chemistry and biochemistry, genetics, organismal biology, ecology, and mathematics. Indeed, the solution to most important toxicological questions requires interdisciplinary approaches drawing on multiple forms of expertise. A distinction that has been used to categorize toxicology is biomedical vs. environmental (or ecotoxicology ), the former focusing on human health and the latter on free-living flora and fauna and their populations, communities, and supporting ecosystems.

The Post-American WorldAuthor:
F ZakariaPages:
304Format:
pdfLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
039306235XOne of the most interesting parts of the book is when Zakaria dismisses that Islamic extremism constitutes a serious rival to the West. This is a sharp departure from most American literature on radical Islam. He states that sluggish growth in Muslim countries, and frictions over women's roles in the economy place them at a disadvantage. Also, he believes that Al Qaeda is rapidly losing influence. At one point he mocks them as being little more than a video production company. Indeed, their war in Iraq was meant to unite all Muslims behind their anti-American message. Instead, all Al Qaeda in Iraq have done is kill other Muslims (Shia), and drive away Muslim support. All in all, the book is light reading. It is an interesting view of how the 21st century may pan out, and anyone with an interest in international relations should consider reading it.

0747802394This book gives a comprehensive description of Egyptian woodworking from the earliest times to the Late Period. It examines the sources of wood and other materials used by Egyptian carpenters. The techniques used to embellish timber and the complex joints employed in carcase construction are also explained and woodworking tools and processes throughout the Dynastic period are described. Some of the important sources which illustrate the development of furniture styles and the use of tools come from wall paintings and relief in tombs. The story of furniture is traced through an examination of surviving pieces that are now preserved in museums, including First Dynasty bedframes from Tarkhan and the furniture of the Fourth Dynasty queen Hetepheres, as well as the highly developed cabinet making and turned stool legs of the Late and Graeco-Roman periods.

Electricity Market Reforms: Economics and Policy ChallengesAuthor:
Lev S. BelyaevPages:
252Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
1441956115With the global demand for energy skyrocketing, over the past twenty years many countries have restructured their electric power industries, typically moving from a regulated monopoly to a competitive market structure. The results of these reforms vary significantly from country to country depending on the market organization model and national conditions. This book examines the restructuring in both developed and developing nations, with particular focus on the United States, Great Britain, China, and Russia, and addresses the problems arising from these transitions. The book also contains a comprehensive analysis of different electricity market models and their compatibility with the properties of electric power systems and country conditions. As the most thorough and up to date analysis of the theory and practical experience of electricity deregulation, this book is a must-read for academics, students and researchers with an interest in electric power industry restructuring. It also has direct relevance for engineers, regulators and other decision makers in companies and governmental agencies concerned with energy issues.

The Great Financial Crisis in Finland and Sweden: The Nordic Experience of Financial LiberalizationAuthor:
Lars Jonung, Jaakko Kiander, and Pentti VartiaPages:
337Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
1848443056`The Nordic financial crisis had it all: a botched liberalization, a huge boom followed by an even bigger bust, massive taxpayer-financed bailouts and, finally, deep long-run gains. The first-class team of scholars mobilized in this book convincingly tell a story that should be carefully studied by economists, bankers and policy-makers. After this book, no one should be able to say: "If we only knew"!'
- Charles Wyplosz, Graduate Institute of International Studies, Geneva, Switzerland`The financial crisis in Scandinavia in the early 1990s was a forerunner of the later world-wide crisis in 2007/8. Although the initial causation was different, the impact on their banks, though more localised, was just as severe. So we can benefit, and already policy makers have done so, from learning the lessons in this book on how to restore shattered banking systems to health. For this we owe a debt of gratitude to the editors, who have put together a series of key papers that emerged from a much larger exercise on the crisis that was earlier reported in four volumes in Swedish and Finnish. Amongst the many studies on current and past financial crises, this is a classic "must-read".'
- Charles A.E. Goodhart, London School of Economics, UK`The Nordic experience with financial crisis resolution could not be more timely. Everyone cites it as an example of "how it should be done", but rarely does one find careful and detailed analysis. Now policy makers and others searching for guidance will know where to look.'
- Barry Eichengreen, University of California, Berkeley, USFollowing World War II, Nordic countries were commonly regarded as successful and stable economies. This perception was, however, shattered in the early 1990s when Finland and Sweden encountered severe financial crises. Here, the authors explore the symptoms of financial crisis - decreasing real income, soaring unemployment and exploding public deficits - and their devastating effects. The book compares and contrasts the experiences of Finland and Sweden, then adopts an international perspective, encompassing the experiences of Asia, Latin America, Denmark and Norway. Lessons from the 1990s crisis are drawn, and possible solutions prescribed. The conclusion is that long-term effects of financial crises - financial liberalization and integration - are not as dramatic as the short-term effects, but may prove to be of greater importance over time. Only the future will show whether these long-term benefits will balance or even outweigh the enormous short-term costs of the crises.Highly relevant to the current international financial crisis currently afflicting the world economy, this timely book will prove invaluable to economists and other social scientists with a general interest in financial crises, and to those with a more specific interest in the evolution and models of Scandinavian economies.

Stone Vessels and Values in the Bronze Age MediterraneanAuthor:
Andrew BevanPages:
310Format:

0521880807The societies that developed in the eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age produced the most prolific and diverse range of stone vessel traditions known at any time or anywhere in the world. Stone vessels are therefore a key class of artifact in the early history of this region. In this book, Andrew Bevan considers individual stone vessel industries in great detail. He also offers a highly comparative and value-led perspective on production, consumption and exchange logics throughout the eastern Mediterranean over a period of two millennia during the Bronze Age (ca. 3000-1200 BC).

Indistinguishability Operators: Modelling Fuzzy Equalities and Fuzzy Equivalence RelationsAuthor:
Jordi RecasensPages:
262Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
3642162215Indistinguishability operators are essential tools in fuzzy logic since they fuzzify the concepts of equivalence relation and crisp equality. This book collects all the main aspects of these operators in a single volume for the first time. The stress is put on the study of their structure and the monograph starts presenting the different ways in which indistinguishability operators can be generated and represented. Special attention is paid to the Representation Theorem and the Sup-T product. Extensionality of fuzzy subsets is studied in detail and is related to their observability and to the granularity. The metric behaviour of indistinguishability operators and their connection with cluster analysis and hierarchical trees is established. Different ways to aggregate such operators are given as well as a number of methods to obtain transitive approximations of a fuzzy relation. Applications to approximate reasoning and to the study of fuzzy subgroups are also provided. The book ends with a chapter on finite-valued indistinguishability operators.

Health Law and the European UnionAuthor:
Tamara K. HerveyPages:
540Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
0521605245How does the law of the European Union affect health law and policy? At first sight, it seems limited. However, despite its restricted formal competence, the EU has recently become increasingly involved in the health field. Litigation based on EU law has resulted in a 'right to receive health care services' across national boundaries which may have huge practical implications for national health systems. The EU has promulgated legislation regulating clinical research, and the marketing of pharmaceuticals; patients' rights are affected by EU legislation on data protection and product liability; the qualifications of health care professionals are legally recognised across the EU; and the EU has acted to promote public health. This book explores the various impacts of measures of EU law on national health law and policy. Through elaboration of selected examples, the authors show that, within the EU, health law cannot be regarded as a purely national affair.

Families and the European Union: Law, Politics and PluralismAuthor:
Clare McGlynnPages:
262Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
0521613353In the first book to offer a comprehensive analysis of family law in the European Union, McGlynn argues that a traditional concept of 'family' which has many adverse effects - on individuals, on families (in all their diverse forms), and indeed on the economic ambitions of the EU is forming the basis for the little-recognised and under-researched field of EU family law. This book examines three different aspects of family life - childhood, parenthood and partnerships - and critically analyses existing EU law in relation to each. It examines the emerging field of EU family law, providing a highly sceptical account of recent developments and a robust challenge to the arguments in favour of the codification of European civil law, including family law.

Salvation and Globalization in the Early Jesuit MissionsAuthor:
Luke ClosseyPages:
339Format:
pdfLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
0000000000This is the first truly global study of the Society of Jesus's early missions. Up to now historians have treated the early-modern Catholic missionary project as a disjointed collection of regional missions rather than as a single world-encompassing example of religious globalization. Luke Clossey shows how the vast distances separating missions led to logistical problems of transportation and communication incompatible with traditional views of the Society as a tightly centralized military machine. In fact, connections unmediated by Rome sprung up between the missions throughout the seventeenth century. He follows trails of personnel, money, relics and information between missions in seventeenth-century China, Germany and Mexico, and explores how Jesuits understood space and time and visualized universal mission and salvation. This pioneering study demonstrates that a global perspective is essential to understanding the Jesuits and will be required reading for historians of Catholicism and the early-modern world.
