Aa a result of Gorbachev's perestroika policy, in 1989, the Soviet and American navies agreed to a series of port visits between their two fleets. The first outcome of this agreement was the visit of two Soviet warships from the Black Sea Fleet based in Sevastopol, a Slava class cruiser and a Sovremenniy class destroyer, to the US Navy base at Norfolk in 1989. This was followed by a visit to San Diego in 1990 by two warships of the Pacific Fleet based in Vladivostok, a Sovremenniy and an Udaloy class destroyer. These port visits presented an unprecedented first-hand glimpse of the latest in Soviet warship design. The author was part of the press pool allowed to visit and extensively photograph these warships. This book is the result of those efforts.
