EnglishISBN10:
1402021631TV viewers today are exposed to overwhelming amounts of information, and challenged by the plethora of interactive functionality provided by current set-top boxes. While there are hundreds of channels with an abundance of programs available, and large amounts of material that can be retrieved from digital video archives and satellite streams, the available meta-information about this content is poor, so that an informed selection of one’s preferred choices is almost impossible. As a result, TV viewers waste a lot of time browsing the available options or end up watching a very limited number of channels.

Inter-Vehicle-Communications Based on Ad Hoc Networking PrinciplesAuthor:

PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
3937300880Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) can help to increase safety and comfort 4 on the road'. As an element for active, i.e., preventive safety, these VANETs can efficiently warn and inform drivers via direct wireless inter-vehicle communications. Thereby, the range of awareness of a driver is extended from current line-of-sight to the radio range of a wireless transceiver. With multi-hop communication, each vehicle can benefit from the locally sensed data of surrounding vehicles or from multi-hop access opportunities. Clearly, sensing, disseminating and retrieving information on the current surrounding shows a potential for improving transport efficiency and comfort. Vehicular ad hoc networks represent a major technological challenge. Safety-related applications require a high degree of reliability and robustness of the communication system. Unfortunately, vehicular scenarios present adverse channel conditions due to the potential high mobility as well as density of nodes and high number of objects able to degrade the quality of a transmitted signal. All applications have to efficiently make use of the scarce bandwidth resource as well. Therefore, efficient and effective medium access control, routing, and data forwarding mechanisms play an essential role. Applications need clever data aggregation strategies to avoid an overload on the wireless medium.

Computational Plasticity in Powder Forming ProcessesAuthor:
Amir KhoeiPages:
449Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
0080446361The powder forming process is an extremely effective method of manufacturing structural metal components with high-dimensional accuracy on a mass production basis. The process is applicable to nearly all industry sectors. It offers competitive engineering solutions in terms of technical performance and manufacturing costs. For these reasons, powder metallurgy is developing faster than other metal forming technology.
Computational Plasticity in Powder Forming Proceses takes a specific look at the application of computer-aided engineering in modern powder forming technologies, with particular attention given to the Finite Element Method (FEM). FEM analysis provides detailed information on conditions within the processed material, which is often more complete than can be obtained even from elaborate physical experiments, and the numerical simulation makes it possible to examine a range of designs, or operating conditions economically.
* Describes the mechanical behavior of powder materials using classical and modern constitutive theories.
* Devoted to the application of adaptive FEM strategy in the analysis of powder forming processes.
* 2D and 3D numerical modeling of powder forming processes are presented, using advanced plasticity models.

364212061XIf the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates came to life again today, he would wonder how airplanes fly and light bulbs glow, but not wonder much about the world’s political and social changes that took place since his time. The author puts himself in the position of explaining to Socrates the technological fundamentals behind all our modern conveniences . Since he takes Socrates seriously, the author accepts the challenge of introducing the relevant mathematical and technical concepts, and he does so in a remarkably easy-tounderstand and accurate way. The result is a comprehensive overview of the elements of our technical civilization, an overview properly based upon elementary but solid mathematical and scientific principles. Everyone with an inclination toward science and technology can take advantage of the clear structure, the comprehensive presentation and the many wonderfully-illustrated examples of the book.

Engineering Peace and Justice: The Responsibility of Engineers to SocietyAuthor:
P. Aarne VesilindPages:
167Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
1848826737The engineering profession has evolved considerably from the early engineers who were, almost without exception, employed in the making of war or in the defense of nations. Civil engineering emerged in the 18th century, pring an alternative for many engineers, and today there is a strong movement in the development of "peace engineering" – the pro-active use of engineering skills in the promotion of peace. "Engineering Peace and Justice: The Responsibility of Engineers to Society" details the history of the profession, including its ethical commitment to the public good, and shows how engineers have, in the past, served their clients as either military or civilian engineers. As well as presenting a discussion of the evolution of engineering, the book also examines concepts of ethical engineering, including the engineer’s duty to society; engineering’s relationship to war and peace; and the engineer’s commitment to the environment.

1878087088The melting furnace and methods described in this manual are the product of several years of research and experimentation, The objective was to design a unit that could be built and operated in the home shop to melt as much as 20 pounds of grey iron, and of course an equal volume of aluminum, brass or any other alloy of lower temperature requirement, The final product exceeds all original expectations and it is both easy and inexpensive to build. While the primary stated objective was to develop an iron melting furnace, it was no great surprise to find that the mere melting of iron does not ensure a supply of useable iron castings for projects, There are technical problems with grey iron casting beyond the high temperature required, Never-the-less we now have the capability to melt the iron and with determination we can work through the remaining problems, These are primarily slag removal and maintaining the required carbon and silicon content,

Transient Airflow in Building Drainage SystemsAuthor:
John SwaffieldPages:
362Format:
PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
0415492653Giving you the first comprehensive presentation of the ground breaking research undertaken at Heriot Watt University, with Research Council and industrial funding, this book brings a new perspective to the design of building drainage and vent systems. It provides the building services community with clear and verifiable design methods that will be robust enough to meet challenges such as climate change and water conservation; population migration to the mega cities of the developing world, and the consequent pressures of user concentration; the rise of the prestige building and the introduction of new appliances and control strategies. These all combine to make traditional codified design guidance insufficient. Many assumptions in existing codes defining the entrained airflows within building drainage vent systems cannot be theoretically supported, so designers concerned with these systems need analysis and simulation capabilities which are at least as reliable as those enjoyed by other building services practitioners. The Method of Characteristics solution techniques which are well established in the pressure surge field are now used to provide solutions for drainage designers. The material is applied to a whole range of abstract scenarios then to a series of real world applications including the forensic modelling of the SARS virus spread within Amoy Gardens in 2003 and the refurbishment of the O2 Dome. Applications to specialised services, including underground station drainage and highly infectious disease treatment facilities are discussed and demonstrated, alongside the use of design and simulation techniques in support of product development.Aimed at both professional and academic users, this book serves both as a design aid and as a core text for specialist masters courses in public health and building services engineering.

PDFLanguage:
EnglishISBN10:
1402062575In this book, switched-capacitor (SC) techniques are proposed which allow the attainment of higher intrinsic analogue accuracies than previously possible in such application areas as analogue filter and analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) design. The design philosophy is to create the required functionality without relying on trimming or digital calibration means but instead to develop methods which have reduced dependence on both component matching (especially capacitor matching) and parasitic effects (especially parasitic capacitance).

140207767XGlobal Mobile Satellite Communications (GMSC) are specific satellite communication systems for maritime, land and aeronautical applications, which will enable connections between Mobile Earth Stations (MES), such as ships, land vehicles and aircraft on the one hand and telecommunications subscribers on shore on the other, through the medium of space segment configuration (satellite constellation), Land Earth Stations (LES) and PTT, Terrestrial Telecommunications Network (TTN) or other landline providers. This book is very important for modern shipping, road, rail and aeronautical concerns, because GMSC are providing more effective business, trade and prosperity in the new millennium, in the first place for safety and security matters and secondly, for commercial communications. Thus, the most considerable marketing and technical point of this book is due to a great deficiency of suitable manuals on the present international book market, which completely describe GMSC fundamentals, space segments, ground segments (MES and LES) and Global Mobile Personal Satellite Communications (GMPSC).

Optical SwitchingAuthor:
Tarek S.El-BawabPages:

0387261419The idea for this book was born in early 2001. I was preparing for an IEEE workshop on the subject of optical switching. It was the second in a series of annual optical networking workshops I have developed for the two flagship conferences of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), namely the International Conference on Communications (ICC) and the Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). The call for participation was circulating when Alex Greene, then Senior Publisher with Kluwer Academic Publishers, saw it and called me to ask if I would be interested in editing or authoring a book on optical switching. I met Alex afterwards in March 2001 at the Optical Fiber Communications Conference (OFC) in Anaheim, California, where we discussed this idea further. The task was big and challenging. Nevertheless, the motivation to pursue this project, for a scientist interested in optical switching, was also strong.

3527312188During the past 40 years, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have undergone a significant development. The first LEDs emitting in the visible wavelength region were based on GaAsP compound semiconductors with external efficiencies of only 0.2 %. Today, the external efficiencies of red LEDs based on AlGaInP exceed 50 %. AlGaInP semiconductors are also capable of emitting at orange, amber, and yellow wavelengths, albeit with lower efficiency. Semiconductors based on AlGaInN compounds can emit efficiently in the UV, violet, blue, cyan, and green wavelength range. Thus, all colors of the visible spectrum are now covered by materials with reasonably high efficiencies. This opens the possibility to use LEDs in areas beyond conventional signage and indicator applications. In particular, LEDs can now be used in high-power applications thereby enabling the replacement of incandescent and fluorescent sources.

Radiation in Art and ArcheometryAuthor:

EnglishISBN10:
0444504877The cover of this book shows an example of AustraHan Aboriginal rock art from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, and is reproduced here by courtesy of Graham Walsh of the Takarakka Rock Art Research Centre. The paintings were first reported by the explorer Joseph Bradshaw (1891). Because they are unusual and the details are unique there has been some speculation as to their origin. And because these paintings have no direct connection with the traditional owners of the land they have not been retouched as part of tribal ceremonies as is often the case. They are deteriorating as the rock substrate ages and organic binders and pigments oxidize and polymerize, which demands that some conservation measures be initiated for their preservation for future generations. The rock art paintings illuminate the twin aims of this book: the use of archaeometry to determine the age, and perhaps some of the forensic details about the artefacts under examination; and the use of scientific techniques of analysis to determine the most appropriate strategy for their conservation.

Soft Machines: Nanotechnology and LifeAuthor:
Richard A. L. JonesPages:

0199226628I very much recommend this book for its synoptic overview of current nanotechnology and the challenges facing it. Explanations of physical principles are clear and precise, and would benefit the layman and the researcher alike. Jones has much else to say about evolution, systems biology, silicon vs. single molecule electronics, etc. I only regret that he only cursorily discusses bionanotechnology (as opposed to biomimetic synthetic nanotechnology), i.e. what he calls the "Mad Max" approach of stripping down and reengineering working biological nanosystems, which he only introduces in the last chapter. He rightly is concerned about public opposition and even unforeseen consequences of this approach, but I would like to know more about what it has made possible.
