It was only when I got near the end of the book that I began to realize that these characters were probably drawn from the author's own family history. Her name is Beverly Jensen, and Idella is married to Edward Jensen, so perhaps Idella is her own grandmother and Avis her aunt, and this book is the working out and imagining of her own tangled family history. I can see her struggling to make sense of the backdrop of her life by bringing these people back to life and watching them play the hand they were dealt.Because this story is so real, there is no happy ending, no predetermined arc, but there is a sense of satisfaction as some of the more shocking problems that these people confront are resolved. I was entirely captivated by the quality of the narrative, and if you care to observe life as it is actually experienced, rather than a story with a warm fuzzy glow, this is a wonderful book.
